My Geek

Our kids are destined to end up as geeks, I don’t think they have a lot of choice in the matter and Annie already displays a level of love for Star Wars that makes me a very proud geek Mummy.

This morning at breakfast she said, ‘ I have long teeth and go “grrr”, I’m a rancor and you’re Malakili‘. I don’t know how many adults know the name of the guy who looks after Jabba’s rancor, I’m fairly certain it’s not something most 2 years old like to chat about.

We sit down at least once a day to read through the Star Wars Character Encyclopaedia, we name everyone in the book, talk about which movie they’re in and what she’s seen them doing. She likes to watch me play Lego Star Wars and the day she is old enough to work the controller and play it herself may well be one of the happiest of her life!

At bed time she likes you to make up stories about her favourite characters as she snuggles down underneath her Clone Wars Duvet and hugs her R2-D2 noisy keyring. I’ve even asked a friend to send over some Star Wars fabric from the States so I can make her a blanket with her favourite characters on.

So far she’s only seen the original trilogy, she knows there’s 3 more films she’s not seen yet and she’s excited by watching them. I do worry that she’ll love Jar Jar Binks and I’ll have to disown her but that’s a bridge to cross at some point in the future!

Aw, love the tea party pic.

  2. Wow…honestly, I know nothing about Star Wars. Maybe I should give it a go…Annie sure thinks it’s a good thing. :)

@Emma: Star Wars invades all areas of our lives, even the girly tea parties ;-)

@Toni: I’m sure Annie could give you a crash course on SW, maybe that should make up part of your first ‘taste of the UK’ care package!

The best thing about this is that Annie is lucky enough to have parents whose level of awesome/geekiness forbids watching the movies in numerical instead of chronological order (there are actually people who show their kids 1-6!).

To be honest, the only reason we watched the OT first is because that’s all we have, we were waiting until the BluRay versions were released before showing her 1-3.

I know this will anger lots of Star Wars geeks but I quite like the first 3 movies, yes Jar Jar is beyond annoying, but I’m fairly certain my parents would have hated the ewoks (teddy bears with slingshots). I prefer the OT and would rather watch those, BUT I’m a product of my generation, they still have wooden acting, dodgy special effects and George Lucas seems incapable of letting them age gracefully.

As long as Annie enjoys watching them I will keep playing them for her, I’m happy to see how her love for the franchise develops.
